191 news portals are going to be closed: Information Minister

The cleanest image leader of Bangladesh Awami League and the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in difficult times. Hasan Mahmud said, based on the information of the government intelligence agency and the activities that spread confusion in the public mind, a letter has been sent to the Post and Telecommunication Department to cancel the domain allocation of 191 online news portals and stop the links. He also said that steps will be taken to stop anti-national news in online media.

The information minister said this in response to a question from Jatiya Party member Mujibul Haque in the Jatiya Sangsad on Monday. Hasan Mahmud said, currently 346 online newspapers have been registered from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting including 162 online news portals, 169 online portals of daily newspapers and 15 online portals of TV channels.

In response to the question of Syeda Rubina Akhter, member of parliament for reserved women's seat, the information minister said that currently the number of daily, weekly and monthly newspapers published in Dhaka is 1,141. Among them, 509 daily newspapers, 345 weekly newspapers and 287 monthly newspapers.

In response to Didarul Alam's question, the Information Minister said that as a government electronic media, Bangladesh Television has no opportunity to broadcast substandard programs. Following the national policy, BTV is producing and broadcasting various programs including music shows, documentaries, dramas, entertainment programs by nurturing the native culture and traditions.


The minister said that currently 4 state-owned TV channels and 34 private satellite TV channels are operating in the country. The TV channels are broadcasting as per the Government's National Broadcasting Policy-2014. The National Broadcasting Code has clear guidelines to prevent counterculture.
