The Bangladesh Competition Commission has filed a case against 36 leading industrial groups, business organizations and individuals including Bashundhara, Square, Pran, ACI for causing instability in the prices of everyday products used by the people.
These groups and institutions were selling daily commodities like rice, ginger, flour, eggs, chicken, toiletries at exorbitant prices. The companies are - Pran, ACI, City, Akiz, Keya, Bashundhara, Square, Meghna, TK, Noor Jahan etc. The Competition Commission filed these cases under its own statutory powers last Thursday. A total of 44 cases have been filed.
According to the information provided by the commission, the chairman of Square Food and Beverage, chairman of ACI, chairman or MD of BRAC Seed and Agro Enterprises, chief executive officer (CEO) or MD of Pran Foods, MD of Citigroup of Industries, chairman and MD of Kaya Group are responsible for the 'instability' in the rice market. , MD of Bangladesh Unilever, MD of Kohinoor Chemical has been booked.
Other organizations include - Kushtia Rashid Agro Food Products Proprietor Md. Abdur Rashid, proprietor of Jahura Auto Rice Mill in Dinajpur. Abdul Hannan, the owner of Naogaon Belcon Group. Belal Hossain, owner of Erfan Group of Chapainawabganj. Erfan Ali, Director of Kibria Agro Industry in Bogra. Golam Kibria, Naogaon Mofiz Uddin Automatic Rice Mill owner Taufiqul Islam, Bogra Alal Agro Food Products Alal Ahmed, Brahmanbaria Nurjahan Agro Food Industries owner Md. Zahirul Islam, Khan Auto Rice Mill Proprietor Putu Mia, Kushtia Md. Dada Rice Mill Md. The Competition Commission has filed a case against Arshad Ali, Brajen Majumder, owner of Majumdar Auto Rice Mill, Narayanganj, Chairman or MD of City Auto Rice and Dal Mills, Narayanganj and Mabco Hitech Rice Industries, Naogaon.
Besides, the Commission has filed a case against the Managing Director of Meghna Group, Chairman of Akiz Group, MD of Bashundhara Group, MD of ACI, TK Group, Chairman and MD of Nurjahan Group, MD of City Group of Industries for abnormal price increase in flour and flour market. A case has been filed against the MD or CEO of CP Bangladesh Company, Managing Director of Paragon Poultry, MD of Diamond Egg Limited, Proprietor of People's Feed, MD of Kazi Farms Group Kazi Jahedul Hasan, Amanat Ullah, President of Egg Traders Artaddar Bhumukhi Cooperative Society for manipulation in the egg market.
A case has been filed against Kazi Farms Group MD Kazi Jahedul Hasan, Saguna Food and Feeds Director, Alal Poultry and Fish Feed MD or CEO, Narish Poultry and Hatchery Director, Paragon Poultry MD and CP Bangladesh President for the unrest in the farm's chicken market. Several companies have also been sued for exorbitant prices of toiletries (soaps, perfumed soaps and powdered soaps). Among them are Chairman of ACI, MD of Unilever Bangladesh, Chairman or MD of Square Group, Chairman or MD of Kohinoor Chemical Company (Tibet) and Kaya Group. According to the Bangladesh Competition Commission, a hearing will be held in the Competition Commission on September 27, 2022 regarding the 11 cases.
